dllhost.exe is a legit file and used by many programs including IE and even Windows itself, and is not to be deleted or blocked at the firewall. The *32 shows that it is the 32 bit version running on the 64 bit Windows just like you have Chrome.exe*32 running, it is the 32 bit version of Chrome.
It could be the likes of Cidox but seeing as you have changed the system around with the likes of System Restore etc, which alters Windows and so on who knows because Windows is not in the original problem state that it was before being played with.
That is why is is said to not alter items around including using System Restore.

so what can I do? The computer is still running excruciatingly slowly, using around 80-90% physical memory with only two chrome tabs and a word document open. And it keeps on spending ages configuring windows, then reverting changes because the configuration failed. Please help me get my computer back to normal....

P.s.I didn't do any system restore, when we noticed the line of "com surrogate dll*32 exe" on task manager we looked online and found recommendations to come to this forum. The only changes we actively made ourselves is turning off sonar and running frst as you told us, all the configurations etc the computer is doing by itself. Help!

"And it keeps on spending ages configuring windows, then reverting changes because the configuration failed."
That is Not a Malware problem but Windows itself with System Restore or Windows Update failing to install updates or System Restore failing to complete. If Windows Updates failing, then Windows keeps trying and trying and trying and trying................... This can be a major procedure depending on the updates and thus uses a lot of the systems resources causing other operations to slow down

You should slowly be able to manually transfer files on to a Flash Drive or Portable Hard Drive first to make sure the personal files you don't have backups of are safe first Here is the Microsoft page for your problem (for Vista to Win 8) support.microsoft.com/kb/949358 and a little "fixit" pop up dialog also appears, If you look carefully some of the steps are only for Win 8. Also if System Restore is used it is best to use a restore point that is say 24 -48 hours before (or earlier) the problem started occurring Quads

thankyou so much for the explanations and advice!! much better, that solved the configuring/ failing to configure loop, and the physical memory is down to around 75% instead of being 80-90%. (can i get it even lower somehow?) Also - you mentioned the PUP's, how do you recommend that i get rid of them?

You may have to switch to having Windows Updates give you the list of updates and download one update at a time by unticking the updates so you only get 1 item ticked, then download it and install, and so on for each one, until you have 1 (or more) that won't install, there you would know which KB update is failing to then look up the KB number. The Memory down, may not go much lower as the system may be deciding that it can have other items loaded in the RAM (Memory) instead of caching them and although at 75% that now has no impact on the system. It would also depend on how much physical RAM you have as for instance Windows 8 / 8.1 could be seen as 4GB minimum required for 64bit (off the top of my head) compared to if you have 16 -32 GB of RAM which is a lot more to have available. Read carefully
Download Adwcleaner www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/ on to your desktop The Blue Download Now @bleeping Computer button and run a scan ( Scan Button). It will create a log after. Or there is a Report button, ONE SCAN ONLY
