You must be logged on to the system as an Administrator (or have Administrator privileges). I believe bluepiglet has administrator privileges so is AVG blocking the registry changes?

If AVG blocked anything it would be in the AVG logs.
But let's look at this further: are you saying that (for example) a file would be named Fred's_List before and it is now showing as Fred's_List.txt?

Precisely. It now says Freds_list.txt and if i delete the .txt bit from the name it stops working.

Ah, now I understand. Sorry for my thickheadedness!! To show or hide file name extensions Open Folder Options by clicking the Start button > Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization, and then clicking Folder Options. Click the View tab, and then, under Advanced settings, do one of the following: To show file name extensions, clear the Hide extensions for known file types check box, and then click OK. To hide file name extensions, select the Hide extensions for known file types check box, and then click OK. <<<===Do this!!(Source: windows.microsoft.com/en-ca/windows/show-hide-file-name-extensions#show-hide-file-name-extensions=windows-7 Works for Win8/8.1 also.)

We need to remove the tools we've used during cleaning your machine. [/a] Ensure the following is ticked: - Activate UAC
- Remove disinfection tools
- Create registry backup
- Purge system restore
- Reset system settings
[/ul] Then click Run. The program will run for a few moments and then notepad will open with a log. Please paste the log in your next reply. Once you have the log file saved, please reboot your system to complete the clean up process. Your system looks clean and your logs are fine. Unless you want something else done, you are done and free to go.Final word from me: Surf safely, and watch when installing or letting anything add itself to your system. Remember, the best security is not on your system but in the chair in front of it. If the file view settings change, you now know how to fix that but they should stay set this time. Have a great summer!
