Your proxy comment is interesting. On initial start-up internet Explorer was trying to use a proxy and I disabled it in IE in order to get onto the Internet and then had to disable it again in Chrome to get that working. Could something still be running in the background?
Happy to turn off Lavasoft to see if that would help but will of course await your advice.
Many thanks.

LavaSoft (Ad-Aware AV) has to be uninstalled as having more than one AV is a NO NO, Then there are tools from Lavasoft on their site to remove the leftovers if removal of items and device (Winsock does not complete. Users around the web are told and told and told for a long time not to have more than one AV. The AV's do the same thing and so can cause conflicts with each other, so one detects the other, (or part of) they interfere with Internet Connectivity, Stops each other or Windows updating or accessing the Internet etc etc Like this thread qmalwareremoval.freeforums.net/thread/218/updating-windows-update-norton-premium)I am unsure about a Uninstall tool for Windows 8 / 8.1 yet as it is not listed in the site below. Then you may want to download the correct uninstall fix ...zip that is for your system (you have to join the forum to download the files) It works for damaged installs also www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?/topic/33662-solution-when-internet-connection-is-lost-after-uninstallation-of-ad-aware-11/ They created the removal fixes as users were losing the internet or having problems with the Internet and Ad-Aware v11 Then Uninstall Ad-Aware using the programs in the Control panel Then use the uninstall fix Quads

Hi Quads, you can mark this one as resolved. I uninstalled Lavasoft as instructed, with no issues. Rebooted and started up Chrome and IE a couple of times each.
The Norton pop-up has not reoccurred.
Thanks for helping me with what turned out to be a schoolboy error on my part. This forum is great and I'll definitely recommend you guys. Thanks again.
