My laptop runs so slowly, it could be RAM - 2GB DDR3, currently at 81%, and am often running at 100% disk. Have turned off various Windows options - searches etc. Main resource hungry apps for both RAM and disk are Firefox and Norton 260. Just wondered if you are able to see any malware running before I go to more hardware?

You may want to update Java and run a SFC /SCANNOW repair to see if that helps.
