OK, I've opened msconfig & did 1 & 2. I confused on #3. "Step 3 should actually read "Disable all VISABLE services"." Forgive me for being so ignorant, but I want to get this right. I need to click "Disable all" as directed. Does this disable all the programs in the Services Tab when I click "apply." And then, is this the list that I will go through, enableing 1 at a time untill I get to the problem that causes the crash? Looks like you got this right. I will try and see what the crash tells us as soon as possible.

Once again ==== >> Netio.sys .
Umm, has McAfee ever been on this system?

Hey debrisen, McAfee has never been on the PC to my knowledge. It came preloaded with a 30 day Norton trial. We uninstalled that since we get it free from Comcast.

Do you have a reputable computer repair shop handy? I'm beginning to think this is a bad memory (ram) problem.

Hey debrisen, My internal diagnostics does not say there is any problem with the memory or disc. I do have another PC almost identical to this one (dual core processor) that I bought at the same time. It has a bad disc that I need to replace. I could switch the memory & see if that fix's anything. I've never been inside a laptop...shouldn't be too difficult...hopefully! It would give me an excuse to change the HDD & learn how to reinstall the software. Is there a lot to reinstalling from recovery discs?

Reinstalling from Factory Recovery Disks is not that bad, IF you mean getting back to OBE (Out of Box Experience) start up. Installing all the MS updates and software updates since the Factory Image was made, however, is another kettle of fish.
As to testing memory, you can probably find good instructional videos on computer testing / repair on YouTube. You may even find some on your exact make and model laptop.
I am also considering asking you to take this Netio.sys / BSOD problem to GeeksToGo.com . I got my malware training (officially) from there and they have an excellent Technical Division that deals with OS / Software / Hardware issues. I will help you as long as you want and I can but I would much rather see this done right other than possibly stumbling over the answer. What do you think?

Dbrisen, you are a true straight shooter. And I appreciate that. If "GeeksToGo.com" is a free site I will try it. Not that I'm being frugal...but this is an entry level computer ($350 @ Best Buy) and putting more money into it just doesn't make sence. There is nothing on this computer that I fear losing. And if reinstalling from the recovery discs can fix the problem...and that is something I can do (will believe it when I see it happening!), well I would really like to learn how to do that. I truely don't mind reinstalling the updates. I actually enjoy tinkering on computers. I wish I had some real training so I actually understood them.
The issue I am concerned with now is the recovery disc creation. I told my daughter to make the discs when I got it for her...she didn't. I did get the "Recovery Disc Creator" to open last night & am burning the DVD's now (taking about 4 hr's for it to burn each disc--5 total to burn). The software started burning the 1st disc & aborted @ about 5%, ruined the disc, had to restart. Am I correct that this is a "new image" & not a copy of the system "now?" I think it is from a partition & a new image, but I'm not sure. I expect there are tutorials on the HP site to guide me as well as You-Tube. And if I can continue to ask your advice, I bet I can do it. What would be really nice is to have a clean install without all the junk that came bundled with the PC when it was new. Is there any way to nix those before installing? Or is it not that important?
Wondering why are you thinking that installing the updates is a "bad kettle?" Is there a better way than just clicking on install updates & letting it work? It would be time consuming if I'm supposed to restart after each update (individually)! I guess I could see that as a "BK!" Sorry if this is an ignorant question.
As always, your help is very much appreciated.
Edit: I got through the Recovery Disc Creation. The 5th DVD got all the way through the verification phase, ejected, then got a pop-up saying there was a formatting error & to insert another disc (another disc wasted--good thing they are cheap). I don't know how good they are with the way the system is working. Hoping they are fine. I do have the origional set from my wifes computer. I think the only difference is hers is a dual core/360 GB & this one is a quad core/500 GB. Do you know if that would make any differenct if push comes to shove?

First, I'm here for you when you want help.
Second, I believe the Recovery Disks will be the best way to reformat and get your system back to working.
Third, I have been here and done that. The updates can take days to complete as you need to do maybe 10 or 12 at a time (if possible; some you have to do one at a time) and then let the system restart and update itself. That is why I said "bad kettle of fish". Nobody realizes how much time is really used up in three to four hundred updates but they usually run by themselves and tell you when it is time to restart so ....
Fourth, the Recovery Disk are usually machine type dependent so only in last resort would we use the other system's disks.
I think all you have to do is place the #1 Recovery DVD in the drive and boot the system.

Thanks, debrisen, I'm game. I'll have a few questions before I start.
I read in the HP Support Assistant section to put in Dics #1, reboot & start tapping f11 & it would prompt me through the process. Seems straight forward. It did not say anthing about the remaining 4 discs. Does it prompt me to install the next disc when it's ready?
I think the only problem I may have is getting a reinstall code for the MS Office Suite (have used them all up, had to call MS & get another code when I got this PC to replace my daughters last one). I will see if I can get it again. And I have to locate the installation disc. Haven't seen it in a while.
1) Is there a way to copy/burn it to a dvd for reinstalling later, without going through all that? Not a bed thing as I can get it for $10 through my work. My job now only lets me put in on 2 PC's though, so I'd rather keep this one intact.
As far as the updates. I assume I will select "notify me when updates are ready to install," then select some to install/reboot & continue the process.
2) How will I know how many to select, and which ones need to be done individually? 3) Since I have been on IE since the last malware scan. Do we need to make sure I'm malware free before I start?
I'm sure I'll have more questions as I go. You have been an invaluable aid. Thank you so much.

Answers:
1) Yes, you can burn the setup file to a DVD / CD for backup. Win7 and above has DVD burning built in as long as the PC has hardware to do teh burning.
2) If you select an update that needs to be done by itself, the utility will notify you and un-select all the other updates.
3) You don't have a rootkit (we checked on that previously) so you are good to go. Everything else will be erased / formatted.
As far as guidance, the Recovery Routine will tell you when to change DVDs. It really is quite a lot better than it used to be; a bare metal install used to be a nightmare. The OEM Recovery utilities makes the recovery of the system almost fool-proof. You should have no problems and you can ask here or at Dell for help.
